Our very first delve into the highly mysterious, yet increasingly sought and promising Gesha Inca variety, otherwise known as SL9. We only first tasted SL9 from Peru for the first time in early 2024, but it has rapidly been capturing the attention of our industry since that time.
SL9 - colloquially referred to as Gesha Inca - has been genetically identified as actually not related to Gesha or Ethiopian landrace at all. It is most genetically similar to SL9 from Scott Laboratories in Kenya from the 1930's. The mystery resides in the fact that no one has yet to confirm how SL9 from Kenya made its way to this small segment of the Andes Highlands in Peru. (Information attributed to Lance Schnorenberg & Christopher Feran).
This coffee was produced by Dwight Aguilar Masias on his farm Nueva Alianza, and this is our first season purchasing from Dwight and team. We were delighted to learn from Dwight about his processing and drying protocols. This coffee was depulped immediately after harvest, and fermented in enclosed steel tanks for 60 hours between 18 and 22 degrees Celcius. The seeds in parchment are washed, then are transported to shade-covered raised beds where they spend 20 days drying slowly
